Help from Above
We want to welcome you to the Help From Above section of our website. We've designed Help From Above to be a place where you can go online to receive prophetic and encouraging words for your spiritual life. We hope to be posting articles here which will boost your spiritual life regardless of the spiritual place where you find yourself at today. At this site you will be educated, encouraged and built up in your knowledge of God, His Word and your awareness of His operation in your life.
But first things first. Before you get started, it is extremely important that you have committed your life to God through the Way that Jesus Christ has taught us to do. Jesus was very clear about the very important role that He plays in each of our lives on our journey to get to know God better. In His Gospel He said, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except for through Me" (John 14:6).
In this power packed statement Jesus was making some very unique claims. First, he made it clear that He was from God. Not simply that He was sent by God, but that God was His Father, meaning that His spiritual origin was in the Divine. Furthermore, He was saying that He was the Only Way to God, He was the Only Truth of God and that He embodied the Life that is in God. If Jesus is right in making these claims about Himself, then it is understandable why He would say that nobody can know God apart from Him.
Now we understand that people who are not Christian have problems with this statement. But it must be understood that Jesus did not make these claims about Himself lightly. In fact these things had been prophesied about Him in the Jewish Scriptures centuries before. The Jews had understood that a Savior would be coming, one called Messiah (meaning "The Christ"). The Jewish prophet Isaiah had said that He would be a unique child who would carry the God's government on His shoulders and would bear the title of the Almighty God (Isaiah 9:6). But he also said that He would be pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities and that the punishment that was to bring us peace would be upon Him (Isaiah 53:5). The prophet Micah had declared that this unique person would come from David's line in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). Job said that he would be a Redeemer (Job 19:25). King David, who prophesied His death, said that His hands and feet would be pierced and that they would cast lots for his clothing at His death (Psalm 22:16, 18 – [scholars: note the Dead Sea Scrolls]). On and on these prophecies go, predicting the nature of His birth, His life, and His redemptive death.
Jesus, who understood that these prophecies were being fulfilled in Him, was very careful in making the assertive statements about Himself such as what we find in John 14:6 (above). He was not trying to make a name for Himself; neither was He trying to take advantage of the people because of His unique position. But rather in everything He did He confessed, "I honor My Father… and I do not seek My own Glory" (John 8:50-51). Nevertheless, He was very clear about His position and its meaning for every person's spiritual life. "Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My Word, He shall never see death" (John 8:52).
When you commit your life to "keeping Jesus' Word" your spirit literally passes from death to life. In fact the Scriptures teach us that when we make a choice of believing Him and following His Teachings, God Himself comes to us and puts His own Spirit in us (1Corinthians 3:16).
God is able to accomplish this in us because of Jesus Christ's unique and redemptive death on the Cross. When we choose to believe Him and become His follower, the punishment we deserve to have (because of the things we've done wrong) is taken off of us. The penalty for our sins is transferred back to that place in time in which Jesus died. In this way, Jesus pays for your sins so that if you follow Him, you have freedom with God. God's Spirit is sent to you and you become immediately connected with God.
I cannot emphasize enough, the importance of becoming connected to God in this way. Before you can take on any meaningful spiritual endeavor you must have God's Spirit within you. Just as no one knows the thoughts of a man except his own spirit within him, in the same way, no one can know God's thoughts and opinions except God's Spirit. If you do not have God's Spirit then how will you know what He wants from you at any given moment? How will you pursue spiritual peace? You must have that connection!
